<image:caption>“It doesn’t matter how much we earn, as long as we are happy. Enjoy the moment that we have.” Mr Mo and his wife set up FengWei Guan in November 2017 and specialise in Chinese Barbeque dishes. Mr Mo has a passion for his food and culture, and would like to be able to offer his dishes into the evening but is restricted by the early closing time of the market. It’s the one thing Mr Mo would change if he could, and believes that the international food offered at the market is something that could be built upon.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"I started as a messenger boy, delivering messages for the butcher on a bike with a big basket up front, and I’m now seventy five.” Tommy Thomson has been working in the meat industry since he was a boy. After an apprenticeship with a local butcher in his home town of Melrose on the borders, he had a full career in ASDA. He took early retirement but found life too boring, so opened up his own butcher's stall in the Market twelve years ago. He is beginning to think about retirement, but shows no signs of slowing down yet.</image:caption>

Now, after Thirty Seven Years, Merchant and Reid have closed its one remaining stall that has supplied fresh fish to the people of Aberdeen since 1981, due to the many external pressures facing retailers in the market.</image:caption>

<image:caption>‘Id rather be the head of a dog than the tail of a lion’ Mr Rashid is a third generation independent business owner and draws his philosophy from his father and grandfather before him. Originally from Bangladesh, Mr Rashid has been providing good value, quality clothing to the residents of Aberdeen for almost twenty five years from his family owned business in the Market. In that time, he has thrived despite the pressures of competition from supermarkets, the decline of the high street, and on-line shopping. He will continue for as long as he is able to do so.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“It wasn’t easy at the beginning…we will see, so far it is working out pretty good for us.” Christopher and Gabor set up their Pizza stall in August 2018 and have built up a successful business in a short time which they put down to the low start up costs and flexibility of working in the market. They make all their own dough and serve speciality Hungarian bread called Langos, alongside Pizzas and rolls. They hope to continue to build on the success and popularity they have achieved so far.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“This could be a good place to start.” Livinia saw the market as a good place to start her Market Kitchen Caribbean food café, but after two years, has decided to close and relocate her business elsewhere due to restrictive opening hours and a lack of footfall. She hopes her new location will prove better in finding a wider customer base for her wonderful Jamaican home cooking.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“If they want to rebuild it, every single shop will have to stop business, and where are they going to re-locate them?” Herine Lamb has built her Asian Travel Agency over the last ten years based in the Market after moving from an unviable office location in Union Street. In that time she has arranged transport, accommodation and sightseeing tours for visiting business dignitaries and those seeking employment in Aberdeen’s Oil Industry. The market has provided a convenient and affordable location from which she has been able to realise her business ambition.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"Me and my brother started as Saturday boys. In them days the Aberdeen Market was the only shopping centre in town. People were shoulder to shoulder. It’s been a massive change over the last twenty years.” Brian works with his brother in the family business at the Heel and Key bar set up by their father in 1972. Back then the market was the only shopping centre in Aberdeen and business was thriving enough to employ seven staff. Now it still supports Brian and his brother, but in their time at the Market they have witnessed a steady decline in their trade.</image:caption>
